And With It Comes Responsibility
Mark 10:44-45 New Living Translation
(NLT)
44 and whoever wants to be first among you must be the slave of
everyone else. 45 For even the Son of Man came not to be served
but to serve others and to give his life as a ransom for many.”
My
husband and My Godson are two men that prove daily that being the leader of their
home places them on a pedestal; not because they have bullied their way there,
nor have they used their position to demand authority or told anyone that they
must listen because they are the head.
Nor have they made it known or an issue that they are in headship or
authority, they are servants. I watch my
husband daily go to work, work around the house, go to bootcamp, work on
projects, manage and support my ministries,
businesses and be wholly involved in the ministries that we are committed to.,
and the brothers that are assigned to his life by sending them words of
encouragement and speaking into their lives.
I have watched my God son, consistently drive from another state each
weekend to ensure he spends time with his family each weekend. He will consistently offer to help around the
house and even to go shopping. He gives
his wife freedom to be who she is, without fear of being known or seen. He spends time doing extraordinary things
like painting his daughters nails and tie nails and giving his wife a break
when she has had an exhausting week even when he is tired himself. These two men are placed by God in a position
of leadership, but they are servants first.
They have committed to leading by example and being the change and the
covenant that they desire to see manifested in their families and marriages.
Leadership
is so important, but often it is handled incorrectly. It is embarked upon with a piousness,
haughtiness and self-righteousness that should not be present. When I was in the Air Force and I went to
leadership school, one of the first things our instructor told us was, take
care of your people, for if you do they will take care of you. He made us understand that our ability to be
a good leader and to accomplish the mission at hand was tied up in how we took
care of those who work for us or that we lead. Leadership does not mean we work less and we
sit back on our laurels, it should mean that we work harder and that we step in
and step up more. A leader should not be
looking at what benefits them most and what makes their life easier, but what
is beneficial to the ones they serve and what encourages them that serve them to
continue to serve and work in a manner that accomplish all that needs to get
done. When I think of leadership it is
hard to ignore God, Jesus or the Holy Spirit.
They lead by example, they sacrifice so much for those that they lead
and they serve even when they have received nothing in return. Jesus led his disciples by doing the work and
by explaining, with kindness and love, not through harshness and piety. He laid down His life so others would and do
live.
If
you are blessed to be a leader, first ask yourself, how you would want to be led. What would you want to see in a leader who
has authority over you? If ar3e blessed
to lead a family, a church, a group, friends, or in leadership in any capacity,
humble yourself, and be determined to be the servant leader that God gave us
through Jesus. Don’t make decisions to harm or make it easy on yourself, make the
tough decision that will lift others up and encourage them to stand. You never know who it is that you are
leading!
