Who Is Your First Call
Deuteronomy 6:4-9 Amplified Bible (AMP)
4 Hear, O Israel: the Lord our God is one Lord [the only Lord]. 5 And you shall love the Lord your God with all your [mind and] heart and with your entire being and with all your might. 6 And these words which I am commanding you this day shall be [first] in your [own] minds and hearts; [then] 7 You shall whet and sharpen them so as to make them penetrate, and teach and impress them diligently upon the [minds and] hearts of your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down and when you rise up. 8 And you shall bind them as a sign upon your hand, and they shall be as frontlets (forehead bands) between your eyes. 9 And you shall write them upon the doorposts of your house and on your gates.
Isn’t it funny how children learn; some of a child’s behaviors are a part of their characteristics or genetic environment, but way more of them, are learned behaviors, learned processes. My daughter who is almost twenty, loves to cook, is a nurturer, and a caretaker; she is a giver and has a heart to help. That is not by chance, she did not just inherit these traits, she watched me for years cook for people, take care of people and nurtures them, even when the same behaviors were not returned. She learned by watching. Just as she learned natural behaviors she has also learned spiritual behaviors, she has learned to uplift and encourage people in the Word of God that she has committed to memory by what she has heard me say over the years, to others and her grandmother (my mother) as well. She has also learned that people are not the first person that you go to when you have a problem, nor are they first one’s you seek out when all is well in your world, that too is something she learned and was taught and retaught, through the experiences of her own life and mine as well.
Who is the first person that you have been taught to call on or notify, when all is well or not so well. So many of us run to Facebook, youtube, foursquare, text messages, emails, and to the phone to call the masses of people we think that are important, but do we ever think, that we don’t really need to do any of that, but that we need to fall upon our knees and give God Glory and/ or seek His face. Society teaches us that taking it to the court of public opinion and letting everyone know so that they can give us some sort of feedback is the thing that we should do, but because we have committed our lives to God and said we will worship and serve Him, and that we understand that He should be our first and last, why are we not bowing in total commitment and submission to Him first? Most of us won’t do this, because we are not sold out, we have not given God our lives totally and we have not chosen Him and His opinion over the court of public opinion and accolades. Our first call should always be to the one who not just created heaven and earth, but created us to as well. We should want to run to Him in our happiness and sadness, in our joys and our pains; we should really be seeking Him out first for His words and His opinion before we seek anyone or anything else day and night!
What is engrained in our hearts and minds about who is most important and who we should call first? What is written on the tablets of our hearts and on the doorpost of our existence, is it to be popular, well thought of, sympathized with or accepted by many or is it more important that God be immersed in our lives and He is known as our first call, our first response and our first thought? I just don’t want God to think I run to Him only when I need Him, I want Him to know I run to Him all of the time regardless of the situation or the circumstance, because of who He is to me! He is my God ALL BY HIMSELF!
