Overflowing
Psalm 103:1-5 Amplified Bible (AMP)
1BLESS (AFFECTIONATELY, gratefully praise) the Lord, O my soul; and all that is [deepest] within me, bless His holy name! 2Bless (affectionately, gratefully praise) the Lord, O my soul, and forget not [one of] all His benefits--3Who forgives [every one of] all your iniquities, Who heals [each one of] all your diseases, 4Who redeems your life from the pit and corruption, Who beautifies, dignifies, and crowns you with loving-kindness and tender mercy; 5Who satisfies your mouth [your necessity and desire at your personal age and situation] with good so that your youth, renewed, is like the eagle's [strong, overcoming, soaring]!
As I journeyed home from a tutoring session for Managerial Economics I was listening to some Fred Hammond. As I got two exits from where I was supposed to get off the highway I found myself stuck in traffic. Of course my first question was “why is traffic always right here in this little section?” But then I relaxed my mind and decided to enjoy the moments I had away from most things to include the Economics class I am completing. I found myself in that moment singing along “when we praise, when we praise, there should be a fire in our hearts hands up raised, when you praise, consuming every part because you know. The God we serve will make His presence Known when you praise. When we think of how wonderful and merciful our God has been to us then we know every glory Hallelujah he deserves, when you praise.” I started out just singing for pure enjoyment but as those words began to resonate and hit my spirit that moment turned into tear-filled worship. I cared less who was watching all I cared about was being right there in that moment communing with God. I had no care about the traffic or the people in it, I don’t even know how long I was stuck, all I know is my spirit, and heart and soul were overflowing.
Life can be so overwhelming sometimes. People and circumstances can work our last nerve and stress us out, but it is moments like this, when we are stuck in traffic, or having to sit quietly waiting on someone that is running late, or just at home maybe wishing we were someplace else, these are the times that God can give us something we would have never assumed that those moments are for. But more importantly we can reflect on the goodness of God and give Him something He so richly deserves…We can praise Him without ceasing and we can offer Him the gift of worship that is birthed out a place of true recognition and thanksgiving. There should be a smoldering fire yet burning within us that with the slightest little fanning will ignite into a roaring inferno of worship. We often do not take the time to feel God, or to spend time in a place where His holiness rests. It does not have to be in the four walls of the church, I heard my Pastor say that He has had to pull his car over before as God, met him right there. It can be anywhere you are if we are receptive to it. If we are seeking opportunity with God He is seeking opportunity with us, even when we aren’t seeking opportunity with Him, if we are paying attention He is usually seeking to get with us and have some one on one time with us.
When is the last time you had an encounter with God that took you over the top, and put you in a place that filled you up. An abundant praise will provoke and overflowing worship. We should be so full of thanksgiving and in such awe of who God is that we are on the edge of a scream a holler, tears, or raising of our hands in sweet surrender to the one who made us, and who has saved us, who has raised us and given us, all that we could never have obtained alone. If we think of whom He is, our soul should be crying out, if we think of all He has saved us from to include ourselves we should want to say thank you without ceasing. When we think about all of His many blessings, even if we aren’t where we would like to be, we should feel an urge to fall down prostrate and worship, for God has been just that good. There should be a praise welling up in us, that cannot be suppressed and a worship that cannot be stifled. We should be full to overflowing!
