Love, Sex, Murder, Revelation And Intrigue…
Job 11:5-9 (New International Version, ©2010)
5 Oh, how I wish that God would speak, that he would open his lips against you 6 and disclose to you the secrets of wisdom, for true wisdom has two sides. Know this: God has even forgotten some of your sin.7 “Can you fathom the mysteries of God? Can you probe the limits of the Almighty? 8 They are higher than the heavens above—what can you do? They are deeper than the depths below—what can you know? 9 Their measure is longer than the earth and wider than the sea.
Today as I did my devotional time, reading my Bible, I noticed, as I read through parts of Genesis, I was so engaged it reminded me of reading a great novel that kept my attention, and kept me engaged in such a way that it was hard to stop. I observed that although I had read through the Bible many times before, that the Bible was filled with murder, love, sex, intrigue, revelation, wisdom, knowledge and history. In those moments I was able to see that the Bible was better than any other book I had been privileged to read. It is an awesome read.
My mom is an avid reader, she loves to read; she is also a teacher and is constantly encouraging her students to read. The one thing I noticed is that my mom will always spend time in her Bible before she reads anything else. One day as we were discussing our scripture readings for the day, we started to laugh as we identified our conversation had turned into, something similar to two women talking about a good novel or a good movie they had just seen. Often times we look at our reading of God’s word as tedious, or a chore, but if we could begin to see it as the best Book to hit the selves ever we would value its content. We would be able to see that all those movies we watch and all those novels we read have nothing on the Word of God. For no matter what your need or what your genre of preference is, the Bible has it within its sixty six books. It is chapter upon chapter and page upon page of the best and most well written literature to date. It is not just intriguing and engaging, but it is filled with wisdom, knowledge and lessons to learn and guidance to follow. If only we could appreciate the Word of God as we appreciate, so many other things of lessor value.
We should think about dusting off Grandma’s old Bible and investigating its pages, we will be surprised at what we will find when we open our mind as we open its pages. God’s Word is a lamp unto our feet and a light unto our path, but it is a good read that is better as well; one that offers more intrigue than the best produced movie or the best directed soap opera. But most of all the Word of God gives us the tools we need to survive on this journey, called life through salvation. Before we open another book, we should open up our Bibles, get into its pages, understanding that it can make us laugh, make us smile, make us gasp, and even hold our breath, but it can help us live a life that is filled with insight, strength and God’s wisdom. Try it you just might find you love it above all else.
