Today’s Devotional Written By A Woman Who Is Living To Learn, And Learning To Live: Mrs. Tracy A. Dixon
Taking Back His Heart
Ephesians 5:1-2 (New Living Translation)
1 Imitate God, therefore, in everything you do, because you are his dear children. 2 Live a life filled with love, following the example of Christ. He loved us[a] and offered himself as a sacrifice for us, a pleasing aroma to God.
Today's message in the music comes from the chorus of Buju Banton's song "I Wanna be Loved". The entire chorus says: I wanna be loved. Not for who you think I am. Nor who you want me to be. Could you love me for me. Real love, with no strings attached. I want to give you my heart. Don't want to take it back. Last week when God dropped this in my spirit it hit such a personal chord, I dreaded having to write this blog. It brought back a very recent situation that hurt me to the core.
This past weekend while talking to one of my maternal figures, she revealed that a recent and painful situation in her life had caused changes to future plans she had set in stone concerning her family. Then last night I received a text from a friend, saying she had made a decision concerning working on her marriage, and some recent and painful actions on his part, are making her question future plans for their family.
In each situation, there is one common thread: the absence of real love being evident. In my situation the attack was from one I had bended over backwards for, to have it all thrown back in my face. For one it was after years of putting in unconditional love and hard labor, the words of her son broke her heart in a matter of moments. For the spouse it was broken and empty words and promises to get back in the house from a spouse she had stood by through criminal charges, jail time and substance abuses.
As I thought about each of us individually, I realized that all we really wanted was to receive love back from those we entrusted with ours; not in the same way we have given it, but by the same spirit. No one wants to feel used up and abused by people that claim to love them. No one wants to feel they are being loved only for things and freedoms they can give. No one wants to feel good enough only to pour out. Our bishop says a relationship that only gives is just as unhealthy as a relationship that only takes.
Today as we begin another week, let us check our heart and love towards God. Let us be totally and madly in love with Him for who He is, just the way He is. Let us not only love Him when He shows up on our time table, or when He opens up the windows of Heaven. Let us love Him for just waking us up, for giving us life, for movement of our limbs, and for another chance to get this living thing right. Don't let your actions cause God to take His heart back. Don't crush Christ so hard, He puts in a request to Heaven for your transfer from the promise to the punishment.
